This study aims to develop a German teaching and learning process that integrates language learning strategies to enhance learner autonomy and to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed process by investigating the learners’ use of language learning strategies, their ability to learn independently and their teaching ability in teaching practices. The subjects were 5 undergraduate German major students of Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, enrolling 2725346 Development of Skills for German Teachers I in the first semester and 2725347 Development of Skills for German Teachers II in the second semester of 2007. To analyse quantitative data, the study uses descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and graph plotting) and inferential statistics (repeated measure ANOVA). As for qualitative data, the researcher analysed the data from the learners’ diary. The study has the following findings: 1. The developed process of teaching and learning German language comprises two stages which are 1) the stage of teaching and learning German language – this stage integrates teaching strategies consisting of six steps including 1.1) introduction stage that integrates language learning strategies in the aspect of memory strategy 1.2) presentation stage that involves language learning strategies in the aspect of memory strategy and cognitive strategy 1.3) understanding/summarizing rules stage that integrates language learning strategies in the aspect of language use strategy and cognitive strategy 1.4) practicing stage that integrates language learning strategies in the aspect of memory strategy, cognitive strategy and language use strategy 1.5) reflecting stage by writing a diary or conducting group discussion 1.6) application of knowledge and skills of language as well as language learning strategies 2) the stage of independent learning – This stage offers practices in the use of language learning strategies and strategies that support and control the process of language learning 2. The evaluation of the process of learning and teaching reveals: 2.1 The mean scores of the subjects’ use of language learning strategies after training is not significantly different at 0.05 level. 2.2 The mean scores of the subjects’ ability to learn independently is at the good level 2.3 The mean scores of the subjects’ teaching ability in teaching practices is at the good level, both in lesson planning and teaching management. 3. The qualitative data collected from the diaries reveals that the process of learning and teaching helps promote the skills of German language, language learning strategies, steps in language teaching, as well as skills in thinking and observing.
