The purpose of this research was to develop a self-learning module for English language professional practices of student teachers in elementary education. The process of development began by identifying the needs of volunteer student teachers along with school students’ expectation on student teachers’ characteristics. Then the self-learning module for professional practices was initiated based on those particular data. Before implementing the module into second semester teaching practice, the volunteer student teachers had tried it out and expressed their opinions and suggestions on what needed to be improved. Finally, the self-learning module was used by those volunteer student teachers.
Five instruments were administered for data collection which were,
1. Needs assessment of student teachers in English at elementary level
2. Questionnaire on school students’ expectation on student teachers’ characteristics
3. Assessment form on teaching competence of student teachers in English
4. Questionnaire on students’ satisfaction with student teachers’ characteristics
5. Interview form on the use of self-learning module of volunteer student teachers
For data analysis, mean, percentage, and content analysis were employed.
It was found that the student teachers needed to 1) develop their knowledge and skills on their English competence 2) acquire the knowledge of teaching and learning English as well as practice their teaching effectively and 3) develop their teaching competence during professional practice period.
The results also showed that after using self-learning module, both volunteer student teachers’ scores were higher than ones before using the self-learning module. Moreover, they both could earn the highest scores in all aspects of teaching competence.
School students learning with those volunteer student teachers rated their satisfaction on student teachers’ characteristics higher than their expectation in average.
The self-learning module served those volunteer student teachers’ needs, so they could deliver lesson learned to their professional practices and finally achieved their goals.
