| Abstract: | ไม้ยมก เครื่องหมายที่ให้ความหมายหลากหลายกว่าคำใดๆ ในภาษาไทย เป็นเครื่องหมายที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันมานานว่าเป็นตัวบังคับให้อ่านซ้ำคำหรือความที่มาข้างหน้าและมีที่ใช้บ่อยในภาษาพูด หนังสือที่เกี่ยวกับการใช้ภาษาไทยที่มีเรื่องการให้ความหมายของไม้ยมกมีน้อยมาก บทความนี้กล่าวถึงไม้ยมกในด้านความหมาย โดยพิจารณาความเป็นไปได้ในการถ่ายทอดจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ความผิดพลาดและความไม่สละสลวยในการแปลอันสืบเนื่องจากไม้ยมก ตลอดจนประโยชน์ของไม้ยมกในการแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย |
| Other Abstract: | Mai-Yamok, a multi-meaning diacritic, is much more meaningful than any given Thai word. This diacritic, traditionally employed as a mark for the repetition of a word or the string of words preceding it, appears frequently in spoken Thai. There has been very little research on its various meanings. This article attempts to explore this missing aspect in relation to translation from Thai to English and vice versa. Various pitfalls in the use of the diacritic in translation by most Thai students and possible solutions are examined. |
