The article introduces optical media, an optical technology which uses laser beams in recording and reading data. It is said to have a high capacity and to be very efficient as well as cost-effective. Optical media falls into two types: the Optical Read Only Memory (OROM) and Direct Read After Write (DRAW). The OROM type includes videodisc, compact disc audio (CD-A), compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM), compact disc interactive (CD-I) compact disc video (CD-V), compact and digital video interactive (DVI). Meanwhile the DRAW type includes WORM (Write once read many) and erasable/rewritable. Related materials and their application are also discussed. A Diagram showing optical media types and their components is included. |
