dc.description.abstractalternative	Characterizes the role of the library in society as seen and established by society, and the library profession’s interpretation of the role thus assigned to it Remarks on the principal and basic points resulting from Bryan Luckham’s, J.H. Shera’s, and Louis Vagianos’ studies of the public library in society. Discusses three competing roles posed for the librarian: custodian, inediator and organizer. Examines the vital roles of the power of libraries in society as concluded from the study, namely: the library as an agency of communication, the library’s conservancy function, and the library’s commitment to the promotion of reading.
