Abstract:	การศึกษาครั้งนี้มุ่งศึกษาความเชื่อเรื่องแถนในด้านเนื้อหาและบทบาทของความเชื่อตามโลกทัศน์ของชาวอีสานในอดีต ว่ายังคงอยู่ในสังคมปัจจุบัน หรือคลี่คลายความเชื่อไปในลักษณะใด ตลอดจนศึกษาบทบาทของความเชื่อเรื่องแถนที่มีอิทธิพลในการดำรงชีวิตของชาวอีสานเป็นไปในรูปแบบใด โดยศึกษาจากนิยายปรัมปราเกี่ยวกับแถนที่ปรากฏในพงศาวดารล้านช้าง ผู้ศึกษาได้นำเอาแนวความคิดทางมานุษยวิทยาในสำนักการหน้าที่นิยมมาเป็นแนวทางการศึกษา เพื่ออธิบายถึงหน้าที่ทางสังคมของความเชื่อเรื่องแถนในอดีตและการคลี่คลายของความเชื่อในปัจจุบัน จากการศึกษาพบว่า ความเชื่อเรื่องแถนมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อการดำเนินชีวิตของชาวอีสานในอดีตในการกำหนดรูปแบบการดำเนินชีวิต กำหนดความคิดทางการเมือง ทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ ทางด้านการศึกษา ทางด้านสาธารณสุข รวมทั้งทางด้านสันทนาการ ซึ่งล้วนแต่มีอิทธิพลอันสืบเนื่องมาจากความเชื่อเรื่องแถนทั้งสิ้น ความคลี่คลายของความเชื่อเรื่องแถน จำแนกออกเป็นความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับโลกและจักรวาลความเชื่อเรื่องวีรบุรุษ ความเชื่อเรื่องผีสางเทวดา และการแสดงออกของความเชื่อในรูปพิธีกรรมจากการศึกษาพบว่า ความเชื่อเรื่องแถนที่เกี่ยวกับโลกและจักรวาล ถูกผสมผสานด้วยความเชื่อดั้งเดิมและความเชื่อทางพุทธศาสนาในเรื่องสวรรค์และนรก ควมเชื่อเรื่องแถนและขุนบรมในฐานะวีรบรุษคลี่คลายเลือนลางไปจนแทบไม่เหลืออยู่เลย ส่วนความเชื่อเรื่องผีสางเทวดายังปรากฎว่าแถนมีฐานะเป็นผี แต่ก็คลี่คลายไปในรูปแบบของผีสางเทวดาอื่น ๆ เช่น ผีตาแฮกคือ แถนนา อย่างไรก็ตาม การแสดงออกของความเชื่อเรื่องแถนยังคงปรากฏอยู่ในพิธีกรรมบุญบั้งไฟ ซึ่งยังเป็นประเพณีที่ยึดปฏิบัติกันอย่างแพร่หลาย
Other Abstract:	The purpose of the thesis is to study a belief in the orgin myth of Taen, Lan-Chang guardian spirit in its content and functions according to the folk worldview in the past. The study also explores the decline of the belief at the present time. Starting from the version of myth at the beginning of Lan-Chang Chronicle, the researcher conducts field work in a Northeastern village of Thailand. Functionalism is used to investigate the social functions of the belief in the past and its transformation. The belief of Thaen played a significant role for Northeasterners in the past. It determined the people’s ways of life, their social, political and economic thought, their health practices and their recreational pattern. The analysis of a belief of Thaen proceeds in four aspects : cosmology, heroie cult, animism and rites. It is found that the belief in cosmology is assimilated by other folk beliefs and Buddhist belief in the term of heaven and hell. The belief in Thaen and Khun Borom as heros has declined totally. However, the belief in Thaen as a spirit exists, but Thaen has become a specific spirit and known in other name; for example, Thaen-na is known as Phii-ta-haek. As for the existence of a belief in Thaen in the folk rites, it appears in the tradition of the sky rocket festival (Bunbangfai) which is practiced all over the region.
