dc.description.abstract	ที.เอส. เอเลียต ได้ประพันธ์บทกวีส่วนใหญ่ในช่วงเวลาที่โลกประสบวิกฤตการณ์อันก่อให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างสำคัญด้านเศรษฐกิจ สังคมและการเมือง นั่นคือสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 และ 2 ด้วยเหตุนี้ ผลงานเหล่านี้จึงถูกครอบงำด้วยบรรยากาศแห่งความหวาดกลัว เนื่องจากโลกถูกคุกคามด้วยการล่มสลายของอารยธรรม ทำให้เกิดความท้อแท้สิ้นหวังและความหดหู่เศร้าหมอง สิ่งนี้ตรงกับความรู้สึกของคนทั่วไป ผลงานของเอเลียตจึงสามารถดึงดูดความสนใจของผู้อ่านได้มาก อย่างไรก็ตาม ผู้เขียนขอแย้งว่ากวีนิพนธ์ของเอเลียตมิได้เสนอโลกที่ท้อแท้สิ้นหวังเสียทีเดียว แม้ผลงานเหล่านี้จะมิได้ให้ความเชื่อมั่นว่าสามารถขจัดความหดหู่เศร้าหมองได้หมดสิ้น แต่ก็แสดงให้เห็นว่ามีทางไปถึงจุดดังกล่าวได้ แนวคิดนี้เห็นได้ตั้งแต่ในผลงานสำคัญชิ้นแรก คือ The Waste Land และเห็นได้ชัดเจนมากในบทกวีขนาดยาวชิ้นสุดท้ายคือ The Four Quartets	en
dc.description.abstractalternative	T.S. Eliot wrote most of his poems during the time when the world experienced two major crises : the two world wars, that brought about changes in its social, economic and political conditions. For this reason, the dominant mood of his works is that of a threat from a breakdown of human civilization, causing despair and spiritual sterility. This coincides with the public feeling, thus makes Eliot’s poetry appeal to a large number of audience. However, I want to argue here that Eliot’s works are not devoid of hope. Though they do not affirm that spiritual sterility can be totally abolished, they show that there is a possibility to alleviate and get rid of despair. This concept can be seen in his first major work. The Waste Land, and is more evident in his final long poem, The Four Quartets.	en
