This research aims 1) analyzing the body of knowledge in traditional performing arts studies in higher education institutions, 2) collecting and synthesizing concepts and theories from traditional performing arts research studies is an attempt to form a fundamental ground for academics and students of performing arts or relevant sciences for future research studies, 3) recommending research topics and academic directions for future thesis or research projects in traditional performing arts, and 4) developing key concepts in the study of performing arts in the undergraduate and graduate level to expand the body of knowledge in traditional performing arts. The research project applies various forms of research methodologies, from documentary research to academic forums and traditional performing arts demonstrations. This qualitative research aimed to investigate, analyze, and synthesize the areas of study, theories, research methodologies as well as major findings in 85 these on Traditional Performing Arts between 1981-2004 in Thailand’s graduate school. Results of the research are as followed: 1) Chulalongkorn University has the highest number of theses concerning Traditional Performing Arts which is 30 copies. The most researched subject of study is Thai Studies, and the most studied traditional performing arts genre is traditional Thai folk songs. 2) The concepts and theories mostly used for the studied are cultural studies, communication, and education approaches. 3) Most studies applied the content analysis approach, while the major research instruments are documentary research, interviewing, and participatory and non-participatory observation. 4) Ten research topics were found, namely the analysis of genres and styles, arts compositions, and performance development, the analysis of performing arts scripts, artist biographies and contributions, the existence and degeneration of traditional performing arts, media exposure and traditional performing arts for development, curriculum development, the relations of traditional performing arts and mass media, succession and transfer of traditional performing arts, relationship between traditional performing arts and community, and audience analysis, which is the least studied area. The most popular areas of study, the analysis of genres and styles, arts compositions, and performance development, focused on the comparison of arts elements, content, and form of traditional performing arts and modern media, while studies analyzing performing arts scripts investigated social reflection, life’s value, and the use of creative language. The study of artist biographies and contributions showed factors of how the artist become successful and the researchers often investigated biographies of National Artist award recipients or famous artist. Moreover, the studies of traditional performing arts existence and degeneration discovered the traditional performing arts’ limitations and he invasion of modern media, which are key factors that weaken the existence of traditional performing arts. The results of studies in media exposure and traditional performing arts for development showed the effectiveness and success of traditional performing arts for health promotion and youth development. Meanwhile, the studies of curriculum development illustrated the integration of traditional performing arts and school subjects, as well as the creation of traditional folk song curricula. In studying the relations of traditional performing arts and mass media, the results showed that traditional performing arts must be adjusted in both content and form when performed through mass media. Moreover, in the studies concerning the succession and transfer of traditional performing arts, research results showed that family and community inheritance, as well as demonstration and teaching by masters are mostly found. In the studies about relationship between traditional performing arts and community, the findings started that traditional performing arts serve as the central of community and contribute to building the network of artist. Lastly, audience analysis studies could be divided in 2 aspects; audience’s taste for character viewing and their understanding of traditional performing arts message. 5) The recommendations of future studies in traditional Performing Arts areas are: The function of traditional performing arts in the community’s culture, freedom of expression, and independence / The impact of social changes on artist / Thai country song artists and their roles as traditional performing arts promoters / The traditional performing arts’ organizational management and artist networking / The creative or experimental research of contemporary traditional performing arts / The transfer of content from traditional performing arts to other media / analysis of traditional performing arts in different social and historical contexts / The design of scenery, lighting, and sound for communication in traditional performing arts / The S-M-C-R approach for media and people development / The application of traditional performing arts and education approach for youth development / Audience analysis as arts spectator / The succession of traditional performing arts by core and new elements mixture / The process of traditional performing arts succession for children and youth. |
