Abstract:	คำว่า “บวช” เป็นคำไทยที่คนไทยคุ้นเคยกันมานานว่าหมายถึง กิริยาอาการที่ถือเพศเป็นภิกษุสามเณรหรือนักพรตประเภทอื่น คำนี้ยังมีอิทธิพลให้เกิดลูกคำอีกเป็นจำนวนมาก ลูกคำเหล่านั้นล้วนสะท้อนให้เห็นวิถีชีวิตไทยที่ผูกพันอยู่กับพระพุทธศาสนามานาน ที่มาของคำว่า “บวช” มีกล่าวไว้หลายทรรศนะ แต่เห็นว่าน่าจะใกล้เคียงที่สุดคือ ปวชฺ ในภาษาบาลี และเชื่อว่าน่าจะเป็นต้นเค้าของคำว่า “บัวส์” ในภาษาเขมรด้วย เพราะเขมรก็เป็นดินแดนที่ได้รับอิทธิพลของพระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาทที่ใช้ภาษาบาลี คำว่า “บวช” นอกจากจะให้กำเนิดลูกคำต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวกับกิจกรรมทางศาสนาแล้ว ก็ยังให้กำเนิดลูกคำที่เกี่ยวกับอาหารและคำแสลงอีกด้วย
Other Abstract:	The word /buat/ in Thai means ‘to enter the priesthood (as a novice or as a priest), to be ordained.’ This word has given birth to several other homophonous words, the meanings of which reflect a long-time influence of Buddhism on Thai life. Etymologically, /buat/ is believed by some scholars to derive from /buas/ in Cambodian. However, it is agrued have that both /buat/ in Thai and /buas/ in Cambodian come from “pavaj” in Pali due to the influence of Theravada Buddhism and the use of Pali as the medium of Buddhist study in both Thailand and Cambodia.
