dc.description.abstract	โทษประหารชีวิตเป็นโทษที่มีความเก่าแก่ที่สุดและรุนแรงที่สุด ซึ่งมีการใช้โทษดังกล่าวมาแต่โบราณกาล โดยเริ่มแรกเป็นการประหารชีวิตกันเองอย่างไม่เป็นทางการระหว่างฝ่ายผู้เสียหายและฝ่ายผู้ที่กระทำความผิด ต่อมา เมื่อคนมารวมกันเป็นสังคม จึงมีการลงโทษประหารชีวิตอย่างเป็นทางการโดยรัฐ ทั้งนี้ การลงโทษประหารชีวิตเป็นการตอบสนองต่อวัตถุประสงค์ในการลงโทษ โดยเป็นการแก้แค้นทดแทนแก่ผู้กระทำความผิด อีกทั้งเป็นการข่มขู่ยับยั้งมิให้ผู้อื่นกระทำความผิดในทำนองเดียวกัน และเป็นการตัดโอกาสมิให้ผู้กระทำความผิดกระทำความผิดซ้ำอีกด้วย อย่างไรก็ดี แม้โทษประหารชีวิตจะมีมาอย่างยาวนาน แต่กระบวนการในการลงโทษประหารชีวิตกลับมีวิวัฒนาการและมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามแต่ละสมัย ซึ่งกระบวนการในการลงโทษประหารชีวิตนั้นก็มิได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามอำเภอใจของผู้มีอำนาจในสมัยนั้นๆ หากแต่วิวัฒนาการดังกล่าวเกิดขึ้นจากปัจจัยด้านต่างๆ ทั้งในด้านคติความเชื่อ ด้านเศรษฐกิจและทรัพยากร ด้านสังคม และด้านวิเทศสัมพันธ์ ทั้งนี้ แม้วิวัฒนาการของกระบวนการลงโทษประหารชีวิตจะเป็นไปตามปัจจัยหลายด้าน ซึ่งวิวัฒนาการดังกล่าวนั้นย่อมมิได้เป็นผลมาจากปัจจัยใดเพียงปัจจัยหนึ่ง อย่างไรก็ตามปัจจัยในแต่ละด้านนั้นก็ส่งผลต่อกระบวนการลงโทษประหารชีวิตในแต่ละสมัยที่แตกต่างกันไป กล่าวคือ ปัจจัยทางด้านคติความเชื่อ และปัจจัยด้านสังคมจะมีผลต่อกระบวนการลงโทษประหารชีวิตของประเทศไทยในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา และกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้นเป็นอย่างมาก แต่ในสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนกลางและตอนปลาย ปัจจัยด้านเศรษฐกิจและทรัพยากร รวมถึงปัจจัยด้านวิเทศสัมพันธ์จะส่งผลต่อกระบวนการลงโทษประหารชีวิตมากกว่า ซึ่งปัจจัยดังกล่าวนั้นยังส่งผลต่อวิวัฒนาการของกระบวนการลงโทษประหารชีวิตในประเทศไทยมาจนปัจจุบัน	en_US
dc.description.abstractalternative	Capital punishment has long been the oldest and the most severe form of punishment in history. Initially, capital punishment was conducted arbitrarily and informally between victims and offenders. As the notion of the people’s society emerged, capital punishment has then been officially performed by State. Capital punishment serves many purposes: to seek revenge towards the offender, to deter any potential offenders from committing a crime, and to reduce the possibility of having repeated offenders. Despite its long-standing existence, the process of conducting capital punishment has evolved and changed throughout the time. Such evolution did not occur out of arbitrary decisions by the rulers at the time, but it was the result of various factors such as beliefs, economy and resources, society, and international relations. Notwithstanding the correlation between the factors and the evolution, each aspect of those factors affects the capital punishment process in different era. It is argued that beliefs and society factors had a vital role in influencing the process of capital punishment in the Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin eras, while such process in the later years of the Rattanakosin era has been influenced by the factors involving economy, resources, and international relations. These factors remain in effect in influencing the evolution of the capital punishment in Thailand today.	en_US
