| Abstract: | วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการสืบทอดและการผลิตซ้ำความเชื่อ ตำนานและพิธีกรรมเกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุตในสังคมไทยปัจจุบัน ผู้วิจัยรวบรวมข้อมูลในช่วง พ.ศ. 2554 – 2557 ทั้งข้อมูลเอกสาร ข้อมูลภาคสนาม และข้อมูลในสื่อสมัยใหม่ ทั้งในบริบทท้องถิ่นภาคเหนือ ภาคอีสานและภาคกลาง และบริบทของสังคมไทยในเชิงภาพรวม ผลการศึกษาตำนานเกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุต ผู้วิจัยได้จัดประเภทตำนานพระอุปคุตในประเทศไทยออกเป็น 6 แบบเรื่อง ได้แก่ แบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตเป็นลูกนางปลา แบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตเป็นลูกพระพุทธเจ้า แบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตปราบมาร แบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตบันดาลโชค แบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตแปดรูป และแบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตหยุดตะวัน ผู้วิจัยพบว่าในการผลิตซ้ำตำนานพระอุปคุตในสื่อสมัยใหม่ในรูปแบบซีดี สื่อกระจายเสียง สื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ และสื่ออินเทอร์เน็ต มีการนำเนื้อเรื่องจากคัมภีร์อโศกาวทานมาผนวกกับแบบเรื่องพระอุปคุตปราบมาร จนกลายเป็นเนื้อหาหลักที่แพร่หลายในสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ต่างๆ ในปัจจุบัน ผลการศึกษาประเพณีและพิธีกรรมเกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุต พบว่ายังคงมีการสืบทอดในพื้นที่ภาคเหนือและภาคอีสานจนถึงปัจจุบัน ได้แก่ พิธีนิมนต์พระอุปคุตมาคุ้มครองงานบุญทางพุทธศาสนา ประเพณีตักบาตรเป็งปุ๊ด และประเพณีลอยปราสาทบูชาพระอุปคุต ประเพณีและพิธีกรรมเกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุตดำรงอยู่อย่างมีพลวัต โดยมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรายละเอียดของประเพณีและพิธีกรรมอันเป็นผลจากกระแสการท่องเที่ยว และการเข้าไปมีบทบาทของภาครัฐและเอกชน นอกจากนี้ยังพบลักษณะพลวัตข้ามพื้นที่ คือ การนำประเพณีตักบาตรเป็งปุ๊ดมาผลิตซ้ำในพื้นที่ภาคกลาง แม้ยังคงรูปแบบหลักตามประเพณีตักบาตรพระอุปคุตในภาคเหนือ แต่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงช่วงเวลาของการตักบาตรพระอุปคุต มีการเพิ่มหรือเน้นองค์ประกอบที่เป็นรูปธรรมของสัญลักษณ์เกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุต นอกจากนี้ยังพบพลวัตอีกลักษณะหนึ่ง คือ การสร้างความหมายใหม่ให้แก่พระอุปคุตในมิติของพระเครื่องและวัตถุมงคล ทำให้เกิดมโนทัศน์ “พระอุปคุตปราบมาร บันดาลโชค” ปัจจัยสำคัญที่เอื้อให้เกิดการสืบทอดและการผลิตซ้ำความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุตทั้งในพื้นที่เดิมและพื้นที่ใหม่มาจากลักษณะเด่นของพระอุปคุตและบริบทของสังคมไทยปัจจุบัน โดยเฉพาะลักษณะเด่นด้านการคุ้มครองป้องกัน ลักษณะอันคลุมเครือ และคุณลักษณะทั้งด้านโลกียะและโลกุตระที่มีรากฐานจากพุทธศาสนา ลักษณะเด่นของพระอุปคุตสอดคล้องกับบริบทสังคมไทยในปัจจุบัน ทั้งยังตอบสนองความต้องการของพุทธศาสนิกชนในสังคมพุทธศาสนาแบบไทย ทำให้เกิดการสืบทอดและการผลิตซ้ำความเชื่อ ตำนาน และพิธีกรรมเกี่ยวกับพระอุปคุตอย่างต่อเนื่องในสังคมไทยปัจจุบัน |
| Other Abstract: | The purpose of the dissertation is to study the transmission and reproduction of belief, myth, and ritual of Phra Upakhut in contemporary Thai society. All data consisting of documents, data from modern media, field data from the northern, the northeastern and the central region were collected during 2011 – 2014. The study reveals that myths in Thailand concerning Phra Upakhut can be categorized into 6 tale types: 1) Phra Upakhut as a son of the fish lady, 2) Phra Upakhut as a son of Lord Buddha, 3) Phra Upakhut who defeats the Mara, 4) Phra Upakhut who brings good luck, 5) Phra Upakhut as the eight arhants, and 6) Phra Upakhut who can stop the sun. It is found that myth about Phra Upakhut is being reproduced in new types of media, i.e., compact discs, broadcasting media, printed media, and the internet. New version was created by combining Phra Upakhut’s story from Aśokāvadāna with the Mara defeating tale type. Such new version has become the dominant version of Phra Upakhut tales reproduced in publications nowadays. It is found that rituals concerning Phra Upakhut, which are the invitation of Phra Upakhut to protect Buddhist ceremonies, the Phra Upakhut almsgiving on the full moon Wednesday, and the floating of the pavilion worshipping Phra Upakhut, are continuously performed in the northern and northeastern Thailand. However, these rituals are dynamic with some changing details caused by the influence of tourism and the role of the government and the private sector. Moreover, the dynamics of the ritual can be found across the region as there is a reproduction of the Phra Upakhut midnight almsgiving ritual in the central region. Although the main patterns of the ritual in the north are preserved, there is a change in terms of almsgiving time and some elements are added to emphasize the concrete symbol of Phra Upakhut in the rituals in central Thailand. In addition, a new concept of Phra Upakhut as “the arhant who defeats the Mara and who brings good luck” is inserted in the present day Buddhist amulet market thus creating a new meaning and new image of Phra Upakhut. The significant factors which have led to the transmission and reproduction of the belief of Phra Upakhut both in the traditional cultural area and in the new area are due to the distinctive characteristics of Phra Upakhut himself and also due to the contemporary context of Thai society. The distinctive and unique characteristics of Phra Upakhut, i.e., the protective power, the ambiguity, the lokutara and the lokīya aspects rooted from his history, can well serve the spiritual need of Thai people in Thai society. As a result, the transmission and the reproduction of belief, myth, and ritual concerning Phra Upakhut occur continuously in contemporary Thai society. |
